Dhang shab pa is a Tibetan word that means someone who has volunteered his or her service. Dhang shab pas are drawn from a large and diverse pool of working and retired professionals as well as university students.
Tenzin Dolma is from Bir Tibetan Settlement and she is currently based in Calgary, AB Canada.
She is volunteering in the Project section of Department of Health and her role involves assisting in validating a shortlist of ICD-10-CM codes which are to be used for disease classification in our HIS and customization of Statistical software such as Epi Info for our community’s epidemiological use.
Alongside, she assists in editing office documents such as news reports and event reports etc.
She says,” I applied to Tibet corps because I wanted to be involved and understand how our Healthcare system is managed top-down. Moreover, the opportunity to serve in CTA and learn simultaneously seemed too good to be overlooked. As a saying goes “Nothing can substitute experience” The Alchemist.
Sonam Dolma was born in Bir, Himachal Pradesh. She spent her earlier part of childhood in Bir until she was 8 years old. In 2006, She moved to Madison, Wisconsin, in the U.S.
She says, “It was while attending school in the U.S. that anything field I choose to pursue is possible because of the plethora of opportunities. My passion in life is to pursue a career in medicine and aspire to become a surgeon. My reason for applying to Tibet Corps is that I have always been very passionate about everything Tibetan related. My strong attachment to my roots has pushed me to be involved in Tibetan organizations and association. Even back in Madison, I am heavily involved in volunteering at events. Tibet Corps allows me to give back to my Tibetan community in any way that I can while also receiving valuable experiences.”
One day I hope to be a Himalayan Art Specialist. I want to contribute as much as I can to the Art Research field and preserve it, by pursuing higher studies and working towards creating a platform that encourages art from all over the world to be appreciated with the same ardor as we learn and study our own culture and history. As a passionate student of art, I want to continue striving and learning about Art, its history and its philosophy. In the future, I hope to teach students in developing countries such as my own country Nepal and Tibet about art from all over the world and help them find passion and inspiration by exposing them to different perspectives in art and also encourage them to express themselves through different creative outlets.
I applied to Tibet Corps because I believe that the experience I will gain by working as a Tibet Corps intern at the Tibet Museum will not only help me reconnect, with my roots but also give me a well rounded view of how a Museum functions behind the scenes. Furthermore, Tibet Corps creates opportunities for aspiring Tibetan students, to give back and contribute to the Tibetan Community, which motivated me to apply for this internship opportunity.
Roles and Responsibilities-
– Assist museum director in overall project planning, implementation, production and installation.
– Organization and maintenance of all curator files and calendar.
– Facilitate curator’s e-mail and written correspondence, especially relating to exhibition production.
– Monitor project schedules, budgets and progress payments and schedules.
– Responsible for the collection of artefacts or works of art.
– Write, edit and produce instructional materials to accompany art and artifacts.
– Deal with the acquisition, care and display of objects and items received through donations and loan. – Facilitate project team meetings.
– Liaise with supplier and shippers in relation to the exhibition production and artefacts.
– Assist with installation, including the packing, loading, hanging and framing of exhibits.
– Liaise with both internal and external staff and departments, including technical staff, artists, curators, exhibition and graphic designer, contractors, conservators, cultural institutions and Central Tibetan Administration departments.
Dhang -shab- pa Pema Lhamo is from Sonamling Tibetan Settlement in Ladakh, INDIA. She received her lower schooling from SOS TCV Ladakh and higher secondary in Science from TCV Selakui, Dehradun. She has a Bachelors degree in Biomedical Science from Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for Women, Delhi University and a Master’s degree in Life Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Her dissertation covers on “Retrieval of contextual fear conditioning Memory in rodents” in Sleep Research Lab, JNU.
Her vision towards the contribution in Tibetan community is a lifelong and holds a strong believe in Individual responsibility for the betterment of society. For a time being, she wants to contribute to Tibetan community through Tibet Corps, which according to her is a precious platform to get involved with the Tibetan Administration and best time to understand the core needs at the level of Public health in Tibetan community. Pema major academic interest includes Mental health. Pema attended numerous Leadership workshop and Scientific conference. She had previously in 2008, selected for month long visit to Netherland for an exchange program organized by Global exploration.
She is currently serving in Department of Health as a Public Health Assistant. Her responsibilities includes assisting the DOH program managers in day -to -day activities in programs related to MCH/RMNCH, TB, Hepatitis B, Health Information system, Mental Health, HIV, Substance use, TMS etc.
Tenzin Lobsang Sara was born and raised as the youngest of three siblings in his family in Switzerland. Tenzin Lobsang majored in Economy in 2012 after 4 years in Business School of Glarus. After working in the area of Finance Tenzin Lobsang was striving for a profession change, so that he completed diverse further education and internships in Social Work. Prior to signing up for Tibet Corps he was working as Professional in a district of Zürich as Social Youth Worker. In the year 2016 he also accomplished his service in the Swiss Armed Forces.
As a teenager Tenzin Lobsang like many other young Tibetans in the West began to have more interest about his Tibetan identity and thats why he joined Tibetan Youth Association in Europe (TYAE) when he was 17. From April 2014 till December 2016 he was one of seven board members at the TYAE, where he served two years as Design Director and Fundraising Director and as Grassroots Director for one additional year.
As a part of the Tibetan Youth growing up in the West with a lot of good opportunities, which he has seized, Tenzin Lobsang wants to give back and serve the Tibetan Community as well in the East. He also wants to experience the life in India, especially for the Tibetan Youth and how the Central Tibetan Administration is organized and working in the everyday life. For that reason he joined Tibet Corps, which will get him closer to his goals.
Tenzin Lobsang is serving as a Teacher at the Youth Empowerment Support Program by the Department of Home in the Institute for Small Trade Learning (ISTL) in Bengaluru. His roles are as follows:
1. Youth-/Self Encouragement and Empowerment Classes
2. Language Classes (English, German and French)
3. Other additional classes which correlate with his knowledge and experience
4. Staff support in Administration and everyday life
He says,” The reason for me to apply Tibet Corps is to get connected to my roots and community, learn Tibetan language and culture and also contribute my skills and experience to the Central Tibetan Administration and Tibetan community at large.” He served as a Communication Skills and German language teacher for the unemployed youth at Small Trade Learning Centre, Neelamangala, Bangalore.
Paldon Dolma la was born in Tibet. She grew up in Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Center in Darjeeling, India and she is currently studying Political Science and Human Rights at Hunter College in New York. Her hope is that she’ll further her education by applying for law school after she completes her Bachelor’s Degree. More specifically, She is interested in immigration law.
Besides her interest in continuing her education, she also hopes to explore deeper into the mystical world of Buddhist philosophy and be inspired by teachers like, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Shantideva, and more. In addition, she has a personal desire in writing, especially since we are experiencing a unique time in our history, and she wishes to enhance her writing expression through encouragement of writings by authors like Bhuchung D. Sonamla and more. Lastly, she is passionate about environmental sustainability and her desire is to contribute whenever she can to this cause.
In relation to Tibet Corps, she was first introduced to this distinguished program by her sister, Rinzin Wangmo, after she had expressed her desire in volunteering for a Tibetan-related organization. She is currently volunteering at the Department of Information & International Relation, CTA. So far, her experience has been uplifting and beneficial in many ways. In addition to her work, she is able to visit McLeodGanj where she has the opportunity to visit Tibetan monasteries, and overall, immerse herself with her people.
She says, “I would genuinely recommend this program to Tibetan students living outside of Dharamsala who have interest in contributing to our Tibetan community. Personally, I believe that this program will also be of great benefit to Tibetan students studying in the west who wish to stay connected and involve themselves in the Tibetan community.”

Tenzin Tsetan Khangkar is from New York and she recently graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tenzin was awarded the Posse Foundation Scholarship, which selects students based on their academic and leadership skills. As a Posse scholar, Tenzin actively participated in diversity and community related issues to enforce an inclusive campus community.
Tenzin was also part of the Division 1 Lightweight Rowing program at University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was a coxswain for four years and coxed the Wisconsin LW4+ to the IRA National Championship title in 2014. She is a D1 Varsity Letter Winner and earned Academic All Big Ten 2014-2015 and Academic All IRA 2014 and 2015.
Tenzin has always been passionate about working in the health field. She has volunteered in dental clinics of Meriter Hospital and the Salvation Army of Dane County. At those clinics, she was able to serve as an assistant and gain valuable insights shadowing dentists. She also volunteered in the New York Presbytarian Wiell-Cornell Medical Center where she worked in the pediatric unit and facilitated medical play with children.
Tenzin’s responsibility as the Assistant Public Health Analyst at the Department of Health include:
• Data entry, organisation, and analysis
• Assisting in report writing and editing reports related to Public Health
• Understanding DoH Public Health Programs
Ogyen Kyab was born in Amdo, Tibet and did his high school from TCV Gopalpur. He studied Chinese till middle school before coming to India. He then did his Bachelors from St. Stephens College, Delhi University. He has six years of experience in translation from English to Chinese and vice versa in different fields such as finance, accounting, foreign trade, IT, medicine etc in US MNCs. He wanted to serve CTA and learn from CTA as well and felt Tibet Corps if the right program where he can make use of the opportunity to give back and learn too.
In his leisure, he also keep doing trilingual translation of articles of literary values with usually political and cultural contents using Tibetan, English and Chinese. He served as a Translator for three months at Tibetan Parliament in Exile.
Sherab Gyatso la was born in Lhasa, capital of Tibet and came into exile in India in 1994. He did his schooling from SOS Suja School and high school from Upper TCV School. He then did his Bachelors in Computer Application from St Joseph College 2012 and continued his studies and did Masters in Computer Application from Christ University, Bangalore in 2015. He says, ” I came to know about Tibet Corps through a friend and he found this program the best to serve, give back to the community and learn from CTA as well.”
Nyima Choephell was born in Tibet and attended the Chinese Public School in Tibet and fled to India in 1998. He completed his precollege education at Tibetan Children’s Village School (TCV), and received a B.A in Chemical Engineering from Raipur Institute of Technology and also a full scholarship from Government of India in collaboration with Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). He interned at the Federation of Tibetan Cooperatives focusing on drinking water treatment processes while attending college. He joined Tibet Corps; a voluntary service platform of CTA and volunteered to conduct research on Tibet’s environment at Tibet in Environmental and Development Desk of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), and his research was published in a leading Tibetan journal. In 2011, he received a paid internship from a premier Malaysian Engineering Consultancy Firm in Kuala Lumpur initially for three months and received an additional nine months based on his high quality performance in executing several key projects. In 2013, he returned to India, and taught mathematics to Tibetan children in Dharamsala for two and half years. In 2015, he was selected to receive Tibetan Scholarship Program 2016 and is looking forward to beginning his program in Molecular Engineering at Stony Brook University. He is currently pursuing his M.A in Chemical and Molecular Engineering at Stony Brook University in Long Island, New York.
Kunsang Dorjee was born and brought up in Dharamsala. He did his schooling from and did Bacherlors of Commerce from ARSD College, Delhi University. From 2001 till 2002, he served as an Office Secretary at Dickey Larso Settlement at Bylakuppee. Karnataka. He worked as a Program Officer for 2 years at Home Department. He then worked at DIIR for almost 5 years. He did his Masters of Business Administration from Rochester Institute of Technology, New York, USA.
He wanted to contribute back to the CTA and that is why he served for two months at Tibetan Entrepreneurship Development, Finance Department, Central Tibetan Administration. His responsibilities include the following:
-Mainly assist in reviewing and editing the manual for the Revolving Loan Fund
-Assist in the assessment of the Revolving Loan Fund
Tenzin Peldon is from Canberra, Australia. She will be graduating from The Australian National University (ANU) in November 2016 with a Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Studies, a Bachelor of Commerce and a Graduate Diploma in Korean Studies. She has a triple major, specializing in North East Asian Studies, Korean language and Marketing. The ANU is a research centric institution, equipping her with the skills necessary for in-depth research and analysis.
Her skills and personal interests lead her serve at the Tibet Policy Institute (TPI).
She was also a student at the College of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah since July 2015. This emersion into Tibetan society has led me to develop greater interest concerning Tibetan issues. She is particularly fond of research regarding gender equality amongst the Tibetan diaspora and education of the Tibetan youth. “The ability to contribute towards any improvements in Tibetan policy motivates me to work harder and see that positive change happens.” says Peldon
She completed her Tibetan language at Sarah by the end of March 2016 and she volunteered at the Tibet Corps for two full months, beginning 1 April 2016. She greatly appreciates the opportunity that she got to serve for Tibetan cause by volunteering at Central Tibetan Administration via Tibet Corps.
Pema Khando was born and raised in Switzerland. She is a member of the Tibetan Ngari Korsum Association where she translates correspondences. The Association has build schools in Darchen (Tibet), the Tibetan Medical&Astro Institue, and Orissa (India), Kailash Hostel Phuntsokling.
In Switzerland she worked 6 years in business administration for a centre of addiction medicine. She did not want to work in a ordinary office and instead chose to work in the drug abuse field, where she could indirectly help people who are suffering from drug addiction, it pleased her to know that she also took part in securing their lifes.
The main reason for volunteering for tibetcorps is, that she wanted to provide her help to a tibetan organisation to support the cause of maintaining tibetan culture and its people and therefor securing a future for the following generation of Tibetans in Exile.
Tenzin Dhaze was born in India and have spent her entire childhood in Dharamsala. She had the privilege to study in TCV school after finishing her primary school from Ghankyi days school.
She has finished her schooling from Upper TCV School and TCV Gopalpur (2009) She did her GNM course from Manipal school of Nursing, Bangalore in 2013.
She has worked as an MICU nurse in Manipal hospital in Bangalore and then in SMIH Hospital Dehradun in 2015.
She has worked as a public health assistant on voluntary basis via Tibet corps at CTA Health Department for a period of 6 months.
Tenzin Passang was born in India where she attended boarding school
until the age of eleven, then relocated to New York where she now does
her Masters in Accounting. She believes that Tibet Corps creates a
great opportunity for young Tibetans specially outside India to
experience and indulge in Tibetan activities. She believes that she
has learned so much about the CTA that she never knew before. This
also allows students to get involved within the Tibetan community and
most importantly is a great platform for them to give back.
Her goal as a Dhang Shab Pa is to fully understand the way CTA
functions and incorporate her knowledge in Auditing to create an even
richer Tibetan Government in Exile.
Tsewang Rigzin was born in 1982, in a Gyantse village of Central Tibet. After attending Chinese school in Lhasa till, fifth grade, hecame to Indian in the winter of 1992. In India, he did his schooling from Tibetan Children’s Village School, Dharamsala till 12th standard. After completion of schooling in Dharamsala, he went to South Indian state of Karnataka to pursue his higher studies. He completed his Bachelor and Masters degree in social work and community development from Mangalore University. While studying in Mangalore, he was elected as the president of Tibetan Student Association and President of Regional Tibetan Youth Congress. During his tenure as student leader, he initiated number of activities. First all Indian Tibetan College student Conference (2006) was one such activities. After completion of his academic training in social work and community development, He worked in INGO called PRAGYA from 2009-2012 as thematic expert in Social Development Department. In 2012, he was selected for TSP 2013 and graduated in 2015 with Masters in Development Practices at Laney Graduate School of Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. His area of expertise and interest are in the fields of Poverty Alleviation, Social Entrepreneurship, Social Marketing, Market-based solution, Inclusive education, Effective oral communication, Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods for Development Practice, Monitoring and Evaluation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Development Practice, Global Health, Gender and Development, Development Economics, International Law and International conflict resolution.Last summer, he conducted a survey research status of Tibetan Entrepreneurs in India and his research gained wide interest from various stakeholders in Exile Tibetan community. Currently, he is associated with Tibet Policy Institute as research fellow and conducting research on some key challenges that are being faced by exile Tibetan community, especially in India, Nepal and Bhutan.
Lhamo Choezom was born and brought up at Dharamsala. Very recently, I have joined Lower TCV school as a new teacher. I teach English and Social science to class VI, VII and IX.
She did her schooling from TCV and did her ClXth from Upper TCV in 2007 and joined TCV gopalpur as arts student. She then did her graduation from Bishop Cotton Women’s Christian College and was a Sociology student. After her Bachelors, she joined Al-Ameen College in Banglore and pursued B.Ed.
She says,”I always have enjoyed reading, writing, dancing and singing. I like playing chess as well. I am a positive thinker, and I have always loved people smiling and laughing. I am pretty good at brightening and entertaining friends. I had always enjoyed helping my younger cousins with their studies. That is why, I choose to be a teacher and help our community in a way I could.
Some achievements that gave her the greatest personal satisfaction include:
-Being a successful communicator
-Getting her first job
-Being able to pursue her degrees
-Being able to learn how to play guitar.
Last but not the least, she says she is very thankful to Tibet corps for providing her an opportunity to serve as a school teacher in a Tibetan community.
Dhang-shab-pa Lhakpa Wangyal was born in Tibet and grown up in India. He attended TCV SCHOOLS, (H.P.), India. He was graduated from St. Joseph’s College(Autonomous), Bangalore, India in year 2012 with B.Sc MCZ (Microbiology, Chemistry and Zoology) and M.Sc Microbiology. After graduating, he served as contract Science teacher in SOS TCV GOPALPUR SCHOOL, H.P, India for a year. In year 2014, he has successfully completed B.Ed (Life science and physical science) from Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Punjab, India. From the same university, he had pursued M.Phil Microbiology in year 2014-2015.
Lhakpa Wangyal is serving as assistant education officer under Department of Education and his responsibilities include: • Assisting education officers of academic section. • Supporting different projects and programs like; 1. Classroom reading corner project. 2. Procurement of library books for schools. 3. Internship for science graduate at NCBS, Bangalore and IISER, Pune. 4. Summer science teaching program 2015.
He was born in Tibet (Amdo) and came to India in the year 1994. He completed his schooling from TCV and joined Madras Christian College for further studies; completed both Undergraduate and Postgraduate in English from the same institute. He did his M.phil from University of Madras in 2011, after that worked as English Teacher at TCV Gopalpur for two years. Currently pursuing Ph.D at University of Madras. Apart from doing Ph.D, he also teaches African American literature for the post graduate students at the same university. He has presented a paper titled ‘Marxism and Buddhism’ and his research article ‘ Resistance Writing: the question of genre’ has been accepted for publication. As a part of his personal responsibility or obligation, he has been enthusiastic and active in conducting and taking part in seminars and symposiums on Tibet related domains.
As a researcher, he has a special interest in critically analyzing literary works written by Tibetan writers.
He says, “I joined Tibet Policy Institute via Tibet Corps and during my three month’s working in the institute, I would be doing a ‘qualitative research’ of different literary works (mostly literary magazines) from Tibet in the early 80s.”
Tenzin Choenyi was born and brought up at Tibetan Dickey Larsoe Settlement, Bylakuppee. She did her primary school from CST CVP School Bylakuppe, continued her studies till 10th grade at SOS TCV School Bylakuppe and completed her high school at SOS TCV School, Upper Dharamsala. She did her Bachelors of Dental Surgery at The Oxford Dental College and Hospital Bangalore (Recognized by The Govt Of Karnataka and Dental Council Of INDIA, New Delhi, Affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University Of Health Science) and got registered as a dentist under the Karnataka State Dental Council with the register no 35039 A. Her Pala Tenzin lodoe is a handicraft manager and amala Tenzin Yangkyi is a chief accountant at Tibetan Dickey Larsoe Primary Agricultural Co-operative Society Ltd, Bylakuppe. They have been serving our community for more than 25years.
After completing her final year BDS university exam, she served as a volunteer dentist at Tso Jhe Khangser Hospital for a month under the supervision of Dr. Raguvendra.
On 26th march 2015 she completed one year rotatory internship program at The Oxford Dental College and Hospital. She did her rotations in department of PROSTHODONTICS, CONSERVATIVE & ENDODONTICS DENTISTRY, ORTHODONTICS, ORAL PATHOLOGY, PERIODONTICS, ORAL MEDICINE AND RADIOLOGY, ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY, and PEDODONTICS AND PUBLIC HEALTH DENTISTRY. During her internship programme she had attended various oral health camps conducted by various community centers as well as educated school children in basic dental hygiene. She also had an opportunity to treat large under privileged population and was able to insulate them the importance of oral health. She has participated in under graduate convention such as national IAOMR, PERIO- PRABHATH and co-curricular activities conducted at college. She also presented e-posters and attended various lecture series.
She is currently serving Tibetan community as a volunteer dentist at Tso Jhe Khangsar hospital through Tibet Corps from 1st may 2015 for duration of 6 month. Her main motivation of volunteering is to deeply gratitude to His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama all his infinite love, kindness and efforts and also to Central Tibetan Administration as I got the best of education in school and colleges via scholarships which I think is my moral responsibility to give back to our community. Also I have been always advised and reminded by my parents and my grandma on an importance of serving our community that has offered so much more.
“I feel strongly feel that dental health is an essential part of the overall health system. With modern lifestyle, dental problems becoming common in all society and therefore with my knowledge, best of abilities and experience I will serve our community. Lastly I would like to thank Tibet Corps for giving me an opportunity and inspiring talented Tibetans to serve our community. I am sure that there will be more budding Tibetan dentist will come to serve our community.
Having been brought up as a Tibetan Refugee, he always had the urge to be the best he could be, to ensure that he can overcome any difficulty, and he understood the importance of education from a very young age. Additionally his love for Lego and the fascination with the creation of something beautiful from nothing had him convinced that he should go into the world of construction. After been awarded the Gadhen Podrang in 2010 for science stream, he was fortunate to receive a full four year scholarship to study Bachelors in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa,IL.
He graduated from my University in August 2014, majoring in Construction management and Water treatment. Along with my studies, he had the opportunity to serve as volunteer in a Global NGO called Engineers without Border ( EWB) for the past 1 and half year. The NGO stands for the idea of helping people in need and with 6 other school mates, after working intensively for almost half a year we had the opportunity to visit Namsaling, Nepal to construct 30 Bio-Gas reactors. He was selected as part of a three man delegation team to monitor and survey the village and obtain a base for future projects. Much was learned from this experience and he hopes to share and learn as much as he could during my stay at the Department of homes.
He says,” I feel the need for young professionals to give back to the community and having returned to India, with the opportunity provided through Tibet Corps I am excited and motivated to serve as a construction supervisor at the Department of Homes.” His responsibilities include the following:
1. To help plan, draw & examine construction blueprint.
2. To do site visit & monitoring of construction work.
3. To check quality of materials used in construction.
4. To work in close coordination with construction committee.
5. To act as an Assistant Consultant for construction work.
Dawa Dolma la came from Tibet in 1994 and did her schooling from TCV. In 2005, she has completed her high school from Upper TCV school. She has received BPT(Bachelor of Physiotherapy) degree from The Oxford College of Physiotherapy, affiliated to RGUHS, Bangalore. Her Compulsory Rotating Internship was done in different Hospitals like NIMHANS, St.marthas Hospital, Sagar Apollo Hospital at Bangalore after the completion of BPT course.
She got four years of intensive work experience as Consultant Physiotherapist in RECOUP( Neuromuscular Rehabilitation), Bangalore. During her service in RECOUP, she had rigorous training for her professional development simultaneously. Particularly, she is well trained in Manual Therapy which is a rare skill but one of the most efficient treatment for RSI( work related musculoskeletal disorders). She has been posted in corporate sectors like CISCO, NDS, Sterling Commerce as Consultant in Physiotherapy and Ergonomics.
As her passion to work in Tibetan community, she came to Dharamsala at the mid of 2014 to look for any opportunities for the physiotherapy field. However, there were almost no placement for the physiotherapy during that time and instead of going back to Bangalore, she opened her own clinic at Geden Choeling Nunnery, Mcload Ganj as she felt that the physiotherapy service would be really helpful for many nuns. She had treated many patients at free of cost initially and charged only minimum amount later for the Geden Choeling Nuns. She was happy to continue this service via Tibet Corps where she gets a better platform and opportunity to serve Tibetan patients living in Bylakuppe, one of the major Tibetan Settlements in India
She is currently serving at Tso Jhe Khangsar Hospital, Bylakuppe settlement and her responsibilities are as follows:
1. Initiate appropriate physiotherapy intervention for patients suffering from neuromuscular-skeletal disorders.
2. Visit home for those bed ridden patients requires physiotherapy service
3. Visit old age home twice a week as they are in great need of physiotherapy care
Dhang-shab-pa LhakpaTashi was born in Tibet and raised in India. He did his schooling from TCV and completed his Masters in commerce from Madras Christian College affiliated to Madras University with distinction and B.Ed. from Loyola College Chennai with distinction.
During his B.Ed. studies in Loyola College Chennai, he took commerce department vice president role. He participated in various college level calligraphy and painting competitions and got several awards. Moreover, he was an active member of Tibetan students association of madras.
He is serving as an Account and Business teacher at Tibetan Nehru Memorial Foundation at Clement Town, Dehradun. His responsibilities include:
-Taking Accounting and Business studies class for XI and XII standard students.
-Taking Economic and math class for X standard students
-Taking Economics class for IX standard students
-Taking History and math class for VI standard students
Tenzin Tamding was born in Leh Ladakh and he did his secondary school at T.C.V. Ladakh and completed his high school from T.C.V. Gopalpur. He did his Graphic designing from BDesign technology in Delhi, India.
He worked at Norbu Graphics for four years and is currently doing freelance work. Presently he is volunteering for Publication Design and Section of Education Department of Central Tibetan Administration. He will be designing forty booklets for the elementary children of Tibetan schools under Sherig Department.
He is grateful to Tibet Corps for the opportunity he got to serve CTA and Tibetan community. He says,” Doing something for Tibetan children and students is something that I love and I am glad that my efforts and skills are being used for such a good cause.”
Tenzin Chodon was born and brought up in Dehradun. She did her high school from Tibetan Homes Foundation, Mussoorie amd Bsc Nursing from Manipal College of Nursing. She worked for one year as a staff nurse at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon which is the flagship hospital of Fortis group of hospitals. As a nursing graduate and having worked for a year at large tertiary care hospital has helped me not only gain the skills and the experience necessary for patient management but also the clinical background necessary to pursue a career in Public Health.
She completed her post graduate diploma in Biostatistics and Database Management from Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH), Hyderabad in 2014. She did primary research on “Community based Household, Immunization and safe motherhood survey at Dekyling Tibetan settlement in Dehradun based in DLHS-3 (District LEVEL household survey) in 2012.
Currently serving at Health Department via Tibet Corps she says,” I hope to use the expertise that I have acquired while pursuing my post graduate diploma courses. Using one or more of STATA, R, MS Excel and EPI INFO software, I will assist the TMS system of respective department in cleaning and formatting the 2012 and 2013 TMS data and analyze the data to produce reports for use by the TMS project officer and the decision makers.”
At TMS, she field tests the customized application being developed in MS Access by entering the 2014 and 2015 TMS data and assist TMS system in the modification of the prototype “data entry form” whenever needed. The in house development of customized TMS application if successful is likely to bring an annual saving of about INR 20 thousands t the DOH.
Pema Youdon was born at Bomdila in the north eastern part of India. She finished her schooling from T.C.V. School. Ever since her childhood, she always wanted to be a health professional. In 2012, she did her BDS from one of the well renowned dental college in Chennai. During her college life, she has special interest in public and preventive dental health. She has organized and attended several public health camps in Chennai. She took part in poster presentation in different national seminar.
She has given few poster presentations titled “LEUKEMIA” in the national seminar on basic medical sciences held on 13th/ 14th Oct, 2007, “EAGLE SYNDROME” in the national seminar organized by the Indian academy of oral medicine and radiology held on 5th December, 2010. “DENTAL DIAGNOSTIC AIDS” in the public dental expo and dental education fair organized by IDA on 30th/31st Jan, 2010.
In 2011, she took part in poster presentation competition at the 23 rd ISDR conference held on 8th/9th Jan, 2011 at Chettinad college and received the best scientific poster( titled ” TISSUE ENGINEERING IN PERIODONTIC ” ) at 23 rd ISDR national conference. She attended one month implant training program and BLS training program conducted by TACT academy on 6thDecember, 2011.
After completion of her degree, she worked as a volunteer dentist at Tibetan Delek hospital for five months. Due to her interest, she has organized one month free dental health camp along with Tonglen NGO in Dharamsala. She is currently serving as a Dentist at Tibetan primary health centre, Bir and says, “I am thankful for the opportunity Tibet Corps has given to serve my own community.”
Namshey was born in Amdo, Tibet and came to India in 1994 with her elder brother. She got many opportunities to participate in literary competitions like poetry recitations, speech declaration, drama, debate and essay and handwriting contests. She also took part in dance competitions and athletics. She got a chance to serve as school students committee member in 2004 after her election as a house prefect.
During her college life, she actively participated in the activities and inter-collegiate competitions and won several prizes viz literary parade, literary pageant and collage competitions. She represented Tibet during an “International Youth Leadership Camp” organized by Kodai Global RYLA, 2009. She attended 3rd Tibetan College Conference held at Varanasi as the delegate of Trichy Tibetan College Students, 2009. She was also member of the college Placement Cell during the academic year 2010-2011. During her five years in colleges she participated in many self-help workshops and seminars organized by the various colleges as well as by the Tibetan NGOs.
Soon after her graduation, TCV School, Chauntra called her to serve in their respective school as a School Guidance Counsellor. She also got opportunity to attend several professional development workshops conducted by the Department of Education and Department of Health of CTA. She say,” These three years of services have been my eye opening towards our Tibetan Community. I learnt both the positive and challenging issues of our community.”
After my resignation from her noble job, she served in Kunphen as a volunteer counsellor for two months which was very inspiring for her to work with the Tibetan Youth.
“Through Tibet Corps I am sure I could learn more about our Youth and bring some positive changes in their life. I always follow ‘your hard work and dedication pay you happiness in return.’ So, I am going to follow the same in this service too. Thank you Tibet Corps for this wonderful opportunity.” says Namshey.
She is now serving as an Assistant Youth Counselor and Motivator at Small Trade Learning Centre at Neelamangala, Bangalore under Home Department. She also teaches Tibetan youth a a English Communication skills teacher and does other miscellaneous work given and assigned by her supervisor.
Tenzin Dolma was born and brought up in Ladakh. She did her schooling from T.C.V.Ladakh and high school from C.S.T.Dalhousie. She completed her two years course of Lab Technician from Delhi. Her experience includes working at Charak Palika Hospital at Delhi for six months followed by one year eight months work experience at Ladakh Heart Foundation Hospital at Ladakh.
Such experiences have given her theoretical and practical knowledge required in any future position that she would like to work. She says, ” I have always wanted to contribute to Tibetan society and I am really glad to have gotten this opportunity via Tibet Corps where I can use my skills and give back to the community.”
She served as a Lab Technician at Tibetan Primary Health Care Centre,Leh Ladakh. Her responsibilities include:
a) Doing different tests for the patients( Hemoglobin, Hepatitis B, Urine R/M, Cholesterol, Urine Pregnancy Test, CRP etc)
b) Doing miscellaneous work given by her supervisor
c) Organizing medical camp for doing various tests for the Tibetan patients living at Leh, Ladakh.
As a young adult Tenzin Dhazay’s always keen on making a positive influence in our society and she deeply felt that Tibet Corps is the one which can provide her the best platform to do so. She initially got to know about Tibet Corps through social media like Facebook where there is a page called “Tibet Corps”
She was born in 1990 at Dehradoon. She did her high school from Upper TCV school and then she got an admission in Rufaida College of Nursing, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi. In 2012 she graduated as a BSc. Hons in Nurse and right after graduation she worked as a Home Nurse at Nilofer Currimbhoy’s (Daughter of Sehnaz Hussain) for six months. she worked as a CTVS staff nurse at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute for a year and a half.
Currently she is serving at Health Department and she says, “The experienced gained so far was great and I look forward to learning more of these life changing experiences. I really appreciate the work that Tibet corps is currently doing and I am grateful to them and to the Heath Department, CTA at large for letting me in and making me a part of a good cause.”
Tenzin Yangchen was born and brought up in Kollegal, India. She did her Bachelors and Masters in English from Ethiraj College and Loyola College respectively,which are both affiliated to Madras University.
During her college year, she worked as an Education Secretary in TSAM, Tibetan Students’ Association, Madras and she also worked as an English editor for the association annual magazine 2013.
She is currently working as a News Reporter at the English media section of the Department of Information and International Relations. Her work include the following:
* Proof reading the books as directed by the Secretary of the DIIR
* Writing stories related to Tibetan issues
* Doing some translation work from Tibetan to English
*Other miscellaneous works as directed to do by the office.
Sonam Tsering Frasi FCA was born at Rawang, Ngari, Tibet in 1954. After completing his graduation in Commerce from St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling, he did his Post Graduate Certificate in Education from London University. He did Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accounts in England and Wales.
He has acquired in depth knowledge on commercial and corporate laws, taxation laws, management consulting, financial accounting and auditing through his long career spanning over a period of 35 years in the financial services sector in UK.
He has served the Tibetan Community in Britain for over eighteen years on an honorary capacity as its Treasurer and Chairman. In recognition of his service to the Tibetan community, he was elected for two continuous terms for a period of ten years from 2001 to 2011 to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Tibetan Parliament in exile. He was appointed as a member of the Task Force on Sino-Tibetan Negotiations in September 2013.
In bringing the Tibetan issue on international arena, he was involved in organizing some major conferences such as The International Lawyers Conference of London in 1993 and Sino-Tibetan dialogue for finding common grounds in 1997.
He is currently serving as a Tibet Corps fellow in terms of capacity on the development and expansion of The Social and Resource Development Fund (SARD) of CTA.
Jordhen Dolma is from the United States and has a B.A in political science with a minor in history. Growing up in a tight knit Tibetan community, Jordhen has always had a very keen sense of the Tibetan issue and struggle for preservation. After graduating, she wanted to serve Tibetan community and decided to volunteer for Tibet Corps.
She has been volunteering for the Tibet Policy Institute, where she proofreads works in English, types manuscripts, and other miscellaneous tasks related to editing and research. Through meticulously reading reports and other news from Tibet, she’s been able to have a much clearer and broad understanding of various environmental issues on the Tibetan plateau. As a participant of many Tibetan youth and community activities in the US, volunteering for Tibet Corps created a much more nuanced sense of connection with the exile community.
Tenzin Namdak was born in Tibet and brough up in Dharamsala. He did his secondary schooling form upper TCV school and class 12 from bylakuppe school. He recently completed his M.A. in Economics from M.S University, Baroda. He also worked in Tibetan Students Association Baroda organizing the 8th Tibetan college student conference and the Department of Economics organizing various events and activities while studying.
During his undergraduate studies in Loyola College, Chennai, he was an active member in the Loyola Economic Association for Development – Department of Economics. Moreover, he participated in various college level logo designing and painting competitions. He was even involved with the activities of AICUF – All India Catholic University Federation.
These experiences have given him both the theoretical and practical knowledge needed in any future position he takes up. He says,” I have always wanted to contribute to the society and I am really glad to find this opportunity through which I can contribute and share my knowledge and skills.” He is currently assisting the project staff in implementing the Tibetan Medicare System at Department of Health, Central Tibetan Administration.
Tenzin Dechen was born and raised in Switzerland. She joined the Tibetan Youth Association in Europe (TYAE) at the age of 15. After two years of being the Section co-head for the Zurich section of TYAE , she’s now the president of TYAE since April 2014. She is currently doing her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Religious Studies specializing in International Relations from University of Zurich. She believes Tibet Corps as the right platform through which she can serve the Tibetan community.
Dechen is serving as a Researcher at the European Uniion, Human Rights and the United Nations Desk at Department of Information and International Relations.Her roles are as follows:
1. To do a research on promotion of the Umaylam Campaign at the European Union.
2. To identify China’s main channels to influence the European Union.
3. To create a list of all the relevant and newly elected Members of the European Parliament.
In Spring 2014, Denja accompanied her mother on a trip to Dharamsala, which she describes as a ‘humbling and inspiring experience”. She sought out and approached Tibet Corps, through which she joined the Department of Information and International Relations in July 2014.
Her role as Youth Outreach Co-ordinator involves working with social media especially the development of “Youth For Tibet”, a platform designed to engage and connect young Tibetans around the world.
Of her experience so far, Denja says “It’s a wonderful challenge, I’m learning so much about issues that interest and resonate with me. I’m grateful for this opportunity and introduction to my Tibetan heritage”.
Dhang-shab-pa Lobsang Yangtso was born in Kham, Tibet and escaped from Tibet in 1991. She received her schooling from TCV. Lobsang has completed her Bachelors in English Literature and Masters in International Studies from Stella Maris College, Chennai. While pursuing her studies in Chennai, she had also been a very active member of Tibetan Students’ Association of Madras. Upon successful completion of her Master’s degree, she joined the Jawaharlal Nehru University for her M.Phil in Chinese Studies from Centre for East Asian Studies. She is presently a second year PhD candidate in the same centre and writing her thesis on the “China’s Environmental Security Policies in Tibet: Implications to India, 2001-2013”. As a senior Tibetan student in JNU, Lobsang also shoulders responsibility of JNU Tibet Forum, through her active participation in organizing seminars, Tibet Day festivals and various other activities within the campus of JNU. Alongside her studies, she is employed as a research associate at the Centre for China Analysis and Strategy, New Delhi.
Lobsang’s major academic interests include areas such as China’s foreign policy, social issues in China, China’s environmental issues, Tibet and China Relations, environmental issues in Tibet and International Relations. She had presented papers on the “Impact of China’s Developmental Policies to the Tibetan Environment” at ABV IIITM Gwalior in 2014, “Environmental Problems and Issues in Tibet” at Delhi, 2012 and on “China’s Environmental Governance and Party Congress” at a seminar organized by TPI, CTA, Dharamsala.
Lobsang also bears good exposure and experience in her academic field gained through attending international workshops and summer schools as well. In 2013 she had participated in the ‘Fletcher Summer Institute for the Advance Study on Nonviolent Conflict’ at Tufts University, Medford, MA, the summer school on ‘Human Rights, Minorities and Diversity Management’ at the Institution for Minority Rights, European Academy, Bozen, Italy in 2010 and a workshop on ‘Democracy and Its Participation’ at Dharamsala and Italy in 2009.
Lobsang had previously in 2007, worked as an intern at the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, Dharamsala for two months. Presently, she is serving in the Environment and Development Desk of Tibet Policy Institute. Her responsibilities include researching on the “Dam Construction in Tibet”, critically analyzing the present condition of dam construction in Tibet, its impact on the Tibetan people, recent debates on the Brahmaputra water diversion and its impact on India. She will submit a paper on the above mentioned topic to TPI at the end of August.
Dhang-shab-pa Tseten Gongya was born and raised in Canada and graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Art in New Media from Ryerson Polytechnic University in 2006. Since graduating, Tseten has coordinated, managed and consulted on numerous projects within the arts, culture and media industries. With sound experience as a project manager most latest in the digital, broadcast production industry at one of Canada’s largest telecommunications companies, Tseten hopes to bring her knowledge of methodologies of project management, skills in organization, communication, her passion for leading teams, facilitating discussions and bringing a solutions-oriented approach to solving issues.
Dhang-shab-pa Pema Yangdon came from Tibet at the age of seven and did her schooling from TCV. She has got a Masters in Economics from Ethiraj College for Women and B.Ed from Stella Matutina College of Education, both affiliated to University of Madras, Chennai.
Pema always wanted to take the teaching line as this profession will allow her to use her knowledge along with other resources to broaden the knowledge of many young students. She recently worked as a teacher at Anita Matric School in Chennai. She wants to serve Tibetan School with her educational background.
For time being, Pema is trying to contribute to Tibetan Community through Tibet Corps, which according to her is a good platform to get involved with the Tibetan Administration or community at large.
Pema is currently serving for Sherig office as a teacher at Lower T.C.V. School. She joined as a volunteer on 7thApril 2014 and she will be serving for six months. Her responsibilities include;
- Taking English class for ninth standard students.
- To look after the library as a part time librarian.
- To provide career guidance and counseling to the classes whenever required.
- To take arrangement classes.
Dhang-shab-pa Tenzing Choedon is from Odisha Phuntsokling Settlement and she did her schooling from CST Chandagiri and CST Shimla. She received her nursing degree from Christian Hospital, Berhampur, Odisah in March 2012 and she served in the same hospital as staff nurse for two years.
She always had the vision to serve the Tibetan Community. She was to glad to find Tibet Corps as a medium to achieve her aim of serving the Tietan Community. She is willing to serve the community withe her profession and help as many people as possible.
Tenzing is serving at Menlha Hospital at Odisha Tibetan Settlement and she will be there for six months. Her responsibilities include;
1. Attend the entire duty prepared by the Nursing Supervisor.
2. Attend appropriate delivery of antenatal and maternal care.
3. Nursing care for outpatient and inpatient.
Dhang-shab-pa Karma Dolma did her schooling from TCV and she did B.A. from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi. She graduated Nursing School from Yenepoya Institute of Nursing, Manglore in 2010. She volunteered as a nurse at the Health Center of her home town, Bir. She worked at the same health center on contract period in 2012.
Karma Dolma wants to serve the Tibetan community thorugh her profession as a nurse. She started as a Tibet Corps volunteer at Bir Tibetan Health Center from 1st April and she will be serving for six months. Her responsibilities include;
1. Attend the entire duty rooster prepared by the Nursing Supervisor.
2. Assist the Medical Officer in all the nursing procedure.
3. Carry out necessary home visit whenever required.
4. Carry out health education to as many people as possible in the community.
5. Attend appropriate delivery of antenatal, under five and maternal care.
6. Improve the state of nutrition in the settlement and prepare appropriate dietary system.
7. Carry out morbidity, mortality, birth and DATA collection.
8. Disease prevention by Immunization against Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Polio, Measles and TB.
9. Work and Cooperate with health teams of the Department of Health and local Indian health authorities to improve health.
10. Collect relevant health information and return reports and questionnaires on time to the Department of Health accurately filled in.
11. To visit Chauntra Clinic twice a week.
Dhang-shab-pa Tenzin Phuntsok completed his schooling from TCV and then with his passion for Environment, he took Chemistry, Environmental Science and Botany for his Bachelor’s degree. Currently he is about to finish his Master’s degree in Environmental Management from Forest Reserch Institute (FRI), Dehradun. Tenzin has served TCV earlier for one year teaching, Science, Maths and English. He also volunteered with various NGOs for their good cause.
Tenzin was so keen to get opportunity to serve Tibetan community which shows his dedication and as an Environmentalist, he was willing to serve in the fields related to Environment. And Solid Waste Management was such an area which very much interested him. Tenzin has also got good knowledge regarding agriculture and forestry which can be also very useful to our Tibetan community.
Tenzin is now serving in Agriculture Section of Home Department, CTA and he will be helping with the Solid Waste Management Project and other agriculture related programs.
Dhang-shab-pa Pema Gyatso was born and brought up in US and she recently graduated from Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. Her subject/course (International Studies) also focused on important topics like International human rights, states and societies.
She was very happy to be part of Tibet Corps because she consider this program as an important cause. Tibetan Youth Outreach Program interested her as she believes that with her computer and social media skills, she will be able to reach Tibetan Youths in Exile. She also enjoys public speaking which is a plus point for the program.
Pema is now taking the role of Tibetan Youth Outreach Coordinator at DIIR, CTA and her responsibility is to develop a comprehensive outreach plan so as to raise awareness amongst Tibetan youth about the activities and policies of the Central Tibetan Administration and engage them in its development.
Dhang shab pa Ngawang Nordrup was born and brought up in US to Mr Ngawang Dorjee and Mrs. Passang Yangzom. He did his Bachelors of Arts in Economics from San Francisco State University.
He is currently serving at the Department of Information and International Relations, CTA and also contributing to the Tibetan Policy Institute.
His Responsibilities include:

– Administrative tasks
– Other tasks as necessary
Dhang shab pa Nyima Palzom was born in Kollegal and currently resides in Bir. She did her schooling from TCV Bylakuppe, Karnataka and received her General Nursing and Midwifery from the Kamineni hospital, LB Nagar, Hyderabad in 2009 where she worked for nine and a half months.
In April 2010, she worked as a registered general staff nurse undertaking telemedicine and telenursing in Medanta, the Medicity Hospital at Gurgaon for 3 years and 2 months.
Nyima is serving as a nurse at Bir Primary Health Care Centre under Department of Health and her responsibilities include assisting the hospital’s Medical Officer in all nursing procedures, carrying out necessary home visits in the settlement, providing health education to community members, undertaking mortality, birth and other health data collection, collaborating with other health teams to improve the overall health of Bir Tibetan Settlement.
Raised in Dharamsala, India and Kathmandu, Nepal, Dhang-shab-pa Tsering Wangmo Dhompa earned a BA and MA from Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi, an MA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and an MFA in creative writing from San Francisco State University.
She is the author of the poetry chapbooks In Writing the Names (2000) and Recurring Gestures (2000). She has published the full-length collections Rules of the House (2002), In the Absent Everyday (2005), and My Rice tastes like the lake (2011), which was a finalist for the Northern California Independent Bookseller’s Book of the Year Award for 2012. Tsering’s non-fiction book on Tibet is forthcoming from Penguin, India in 2013. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) and also teaches creative writing to UCSC undergrads.
Tsering’s responsibilities include conducting writing workshops for CTA staff.
Phurbu’s other work experience includes working as a staff nurse at I.A.J. Hospital and Research Centre, Mallya Hospital in Bangalore and Sant Parmanand Hospital in Delhi.
Phurbu is serving at the Dhondenling Van Thiel Hospital, Kollegal under Department of Health and her responsibilities include:
- Assisting the hospital’s Medical Officer in all nursing procedures
- Carrying out necessary home visits in the settlement
- Providing health education to community members
- Undertaking mortality, birth and other health data collection.
- Collaborating with other health teams to improve the overall health of Kollegal Tibetan Settllement.
Dhang-shab-pa Tenzin Tashi is from Madison and she is in her senior year of college and is pursuing a B.S. degree in Political Science and South Asian Studies from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Tenzin served at the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Legislative Intern with Representative Shankland where she was responsible for conducting policy research, maintaining relations with constituents and preparing press releases and writing editorials.
Tenzin founded the Tibetan Student’s Association at the University of Wisconsin in order to promote and preserve social and cultural awareness of Tibetan people amongst the greater community through education and public involvement. She is also an active member of the local Student’s For Free Tibet Chapter and various other organizations on campus including Amnesty International’s.
Tenzin’s responsibilities at the DIIR’s UN, EU and Human Rights Desk include the following:
- Updating and compiling a publication titled “International Resolutions and Recognitions on Tibet”.
- Preparing a research paper on economic policies of China in Tibet and its impact on the economic life of Tibetans.
- Preparing a paper on the independence of the Judges and the rule of law in Tibetan areas of China.
Dhang-shab-pa Sangyal Dorjee is a graduate of the TCV school system. After completing high school from Upper TCV, he started learning web development and design under Mr. James Walker, a well known American web developer among Tibetan community. He has to date designed 17 websites and most of them in Tibetan Language. At present he is studying Computer Science through the Dalai Lama Institute for Higher Education based in Bangalore.
Sangyal came to know about Tibet Corps through Facebook and he feels this program is a good platform to give back to the Tibetan society. He wishes to serve the community and gain experience. Even though Sangyal is a full time student, he also develops and maintains many websites including www.dalailamainstitute.edu.in, www.rigzod.org, and www.tibetanblog.net.
Sangyal is a virtual dhang-shab-pa serving CTA’s Department of Religion and Culture. His responsibilities include:
- Designing the department’s website in Tibetan and English.
- Uploading articles and required information on the website.
- Training the department staff on updating the website.
- Giving introductory workshops on website management.
Tenzin Lhaze was born in Mainpat, India and emigrated to the US at the age of 6. She completed her BA in Animation and Cultural Studies from The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA in 2010 and is currently pursuing a Masters in Animation and Digital Arts at Tisch Asia in Singapore, which is part of New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
Lhaze is passionate about music, literature, dance and visual arts and exploring more of her Tibetan heritage. In college, she became involved in multicultural group and represented her school in the ‘Women of Color Coalition’ conference at University of California Berkeley where she was exposed to women employing art to bring attention to social issues including listening to environmentalist and Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai speak on women’s empowerment. Lhaze volunteered at the Seeds of Compassion Event in Seattle in April 2008 as part of her research work on the significance of Tibetan Opera and there she got her first chance to listen to the speeches of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Bishop Desmond Tutu.
In college, she did a research work on comparison of Tibetan and Western death practices. She worked for an animated short film using interviews and accumulated research on the Tibetan immigrant experience. Her desire to connect animation and social justice made her to move to New York City after graduation. Under the tutelage of American artist Anita Steckel, she explored the ideas of censorship and feminism and she reached out to different artists. She also studied under the guidance of contemporary Tibetan artist Tenzin Rigdol and also studied social graffiti with a well-known street artist. She has also participated in Lhakar programs like petitioning and protesting at Times square and at the United Nations.
Lhaze views media as a powerful tool to educate people and change the way people see and think despite economic and cultural barriers. She believes in animation as a means to achieve change.

Dhang-shab-pa Tsering Dhondup was born in Chandragiri in the state of Odisha. He received his lower and high school education from TCV Dharamsala. Tsering received a B.Sc in Nursing from the prestigious Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai in 2010. Upon graduation with a Registered Nurse degree, he worked at the Sri Ramachandra Hospital for a year in the Emergency Department where he provided care for patients suffering from trauma, acute chest pain, respiratory complaints, drug over doses and gastrointestinal bleeds.
Tsering’s responsibilities at the Menlha Hospital includes consulting patients for basic health problems, providing care to patients in the outpatient and inpatient departments, undertaking home visits, assisting in lab work, and referring serious patients to the hospital in the nearest city.
Dhang-shab-pa Tenzin Norden is from Dharamsala and an alumnus of Upper TCV School. He graduated from Loyola College, Chennai, with a Bachelors and Masters in Physics in 2010. His Masters dissertation was on Photoconductivity Studies of Hybrid ZnTe/MgPc Thin Films. His work experience includes serving as a science teacher where he taught Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences to high school students at Upper TCV School Dharamsala. He also worked with ‘Science meets Dharma’, a project initiated by Drepung Loseling Monastery in Mundgod.
Tenzin was an active member of Tibetan Student’s Association of Madras (TSAM) and helped organize the 3rd annual All India Tibetan College Students Meet in Chennai in 2009. At TCV, he received a certificate of merit in teaching. He is also an ardent nature lover and an environmental enthusiast. Tenzin has had an interest in sciences from a young age. He is excited about quantum mechanics, relativity and nuclear physics. At Loyola, Tenzin and other Tibetan science students formed a Tibetan Scientific Society to interest younger Tibetans in the sciences. Tenzin has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2013 Tibetan Scholarship Program and plans to leave for the Unite States in fall 2013 to pursue an advanced degree in science.
Tenzin is serving as an Environment Associate in the Environment and Development Desk (EDD) of CTA’s DIIR. His responsibilities include: reviewing current Chinese Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies and writing a short report on how far these CSR policies are applied in Tibetan Areas; updating the current booklet on His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s speeches on environment; undertaking independent research on topics related to EDD scope or objectives; and assisting in EDD’s daily tasks of drafting reports.
Dhang-shab-pa Lhadolma is from Boston. She is a graduate of University of Massachusetts (UMass) with a Major in Politcal Science. Prior to signing up for Tibet Corps, she worked as a legal assistant in Harmon Law Offices, a real estate law firm in Newton, MA. Lhadolma also worked at her state Senator Katherine Clark’s office as a legislate intern where she conducted research for potential legislation, created a newsletter for elderly constituents, and organized the Senator’s press book.
She has been an active member of the Tibetan Association of Boston (TAB) and organized and spearheaded logistics for fundraising events, designed flyers and other materials, volunteered at TAB’s Tibetan school and offered translation services to community members. Lhadolma also launched a Students for a Free Tibet chapter in UMass with other Tibetan students.
Lhadolma will be assisting the head counsellor at CTA’s Department of Education and the Tibet Fund office in Dharamsala in building a virtual career counselling and resource portal for Tibetan middle and high school students in India and Nepal. Her responsibilities include undertaking research and surveys; meeting with students, teachers, school administrators, parents and experts; interacting with the portal designer; and preparing content. The counselling project is part of the USAID-funded Tibet Education Project.
Dhang-shab-pa Sangay Choezom was born in Dharamsala and currently resides in Bylakuppe. She received her education in different Tibetan schools in Darjeeling, Gangtok and Tibetan Homes School (Mussorie), and has twice been a recipient of the Best Girl award twice from CTA’s Department of Education.
Sangay received her Diploma in Nursing from GNM Manipal School of Nursing in Bangalore in 2003 and was employed at the Manipal Hospital until 2011. She is an experienced nurse and held the position of second incharge for nurses in a nursing workforce of sixty nurses during her final two years of employment at the hospital.
She is serving as a nurse in Tso-Jhe Khangsar Hospital in Bylakuppee. Her responsibility include assisting the hospital’s Medical Officer in all nursing procedures, carrying out necessary home visits in the settlement, providing health education to community members, undertaking mortality, birth and other health data collection, collaborating with other health teams to improve the overall health of the Bylakuppe Tibetan Settllement. Nurse volunteers like Sangay are addressing an important need as the health needs of the Tibetan community is great and there aren’t enough medical professionals. Sangay chose to leave Bangalore and move to Byalakuppe and give back to the community and CTA.
Tenzin D. Samphel was born in Dehradun, India but came to the US when he was 3. With his father working at VOA he has maintained a constant engagement with the Tibetan community and has had the rare opportunity to be up close with journalists and the news. Throughout high school and college that social engagement lead to attending many protests and later becoming the founding president of the Regional Capitol Area Tibetan Youth Congress chapter.
When he attended Virginia Commonwealth University he majored in Kentic Imaging, a rare hybrid program that allowed students to study audio, video, and animation. During his studies in video he joined an Independent study group of 4 people to make a documentary on the state of mental health treatment facilities in Richmond VA, which was later screened at 1708 Gallery and then later shown at the Virginia Film Festival. He also partook in his first gallery show at RedBull’s “Art of Can” show at Union Station Washington DC. Finally right before graduating he and his brother teamed up to create an electronic dance music production team called STRANGERS. They released their first EP in February of 2012 and going to release 3 more next year.
After graduating from college he worked at various production companies while working as a freelance animator for music producers, health care corporations, real estate companies, and NGOs. He is currently working as an animator at NBC News in Washington DC.
Tenzin is working as an animator for CTA’s TibetTV where he is producing deliverables from rough-cut to finished videos, multi-layered composites, graphic elements, and designing and contributing to overall creative vision of various on-air and off-air projects.
Dhang-shab-pa Tenzin Yangchen Dongchung was born and raised in Dharamsala, and she attended Upper Tibetan Children’s Village School. She recently completed her B.Sc. degree with first distinction from Manipal University. As a nursing graduate, she finds it rewarding to not only give professional nursing care but also to develop research skills. Her primary interest is in public health policy.
While at Manipal University, she actively participated in College Magazine, Inter-College festivals, Trans-Cultural Nursing Conference and literary contests. She was nominated for the best student and selected as one of the 15 students from Manipal College of Nursing for an exchange program with students from Singapore. She was one of the founding members of Manipal Tibetan Students Association (MTSA) and served as its President and Vice President from 2010-2012.
Yangchen’s responsibilities at the Department of Health include: assisting in the planning and implementation of public health programs on reproductive and oral health; coordinating the mental health program for newly arrived torture victims; researching, planning and designing health education materials; and handling various operational aspects of the Tibetan Medicare System (TMS).
Dhang-shab-pa Chemi Dolkar is a Dharamsala native and a graduate of the TCV school system. She majored in Economics with a BA from Meenakshi College and a MA from Stella Maris College. Both the colleges are affiliated to University of Madras.
Chemi brings a stellar academic record and a deep passion for wanting to serve the Tibetan community and CTA. She says she has always wanted to serve CTA in some capacity. She is a strong supporter of the current Tibetan leadership’s emphasis on self-reliance and wants to contribute her share by promoting entrepreneurship and researching business development opportunities within Tibetan communities.
Chemi is serving in Department of Finance’s Tibetan Entrepreneurship Development (TED) Program. Her responsibilities include: researching and collecting data on entrepreneurship in Tibetan communities in India, studying how fostering of entrepreneurship contributes to revitalization of the Tibetan Settlement, and assisting in the development and implementation of the TED program.
Dhang-shab-pa Tenzin Seldon was born and raised in Dharamsala, India and moved to the US as a young teenager. Seldon graduated with Phi Beta Kappa, high academic distinction in the Department of Comparative Studies with a focus in education and global justice at Stanford University. Her academic interests range from international relations, social and public policy, religion, and feminist studies.
She serves in various local, national, and international leadership capacities. She also has worked as Coordinator to President Obama’s Interfaith Challenge to foster and emphasize interfaith understanding among peers. She has organized numerous meaningful discussions with Chinese students on and off Stanford University campus including a notable dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2010. Additionally, Seldon is the recipient of fellowships such as the Haas Summer Fellowship to incorporate critical thinking and public speaking into a refugee school in India and the Stanford Major Grant to pursue research in honors thesis. She has interned at CTA’s Department of Information and International Relations, and is a co-producer of the documentary, ‘State of Control,’ which will premiere in the United Nations Film Festival among others.
She is currently serving as an Executive and Co-Founder of Climate Justice League, working alongside top youth leaders and former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson as the foremost group of prominent women leaders concerned with climate issues. Additionally, Seldon has attending and committed to international projects with Clinton Global Initiative University and serves as Outreach Director for Oxford Women for Women International and a member of the renowned debating team, Oxford Union .
Seldon was the first Tibetan to be awarded the Truman Scholarship. Seldon is currently pursuing a Masters in Comparative Social Policy at Oxford University on the Rhodes Scholarship. Her dissertation will cover poverty, family and welfare policy. Seldon plans to continue expanding her interests in policy, activism, and scholarship in international affairs with organizations such as the United Nations in the future.
Seldon is serving in the Department of Information and International Relations as a Research Associate. Her responsibilities include helping evaluate and document CTA’s Middle Way Approach (MWA), participating in the formulation of a more effective articulation of the policy, assisting with designing an outreach campaign, and supporting the work of the MWA Program Coordinator. She is both field based as well as serving virtually.
Dhang-shab-pa Tenzin Jigme is from Tashi Palkheiling Settlement in Pokhara, Nepal. He did his lower schooling from Pokhra SOS Hermann Maier School and higher secondary in science from Upper TCV, Dharamsala. He has a Bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy from Rajiv Gandhi University, Bangalore and is currently close to completing his Masters from the same University with a specialization in musculoskeletal disorders and sports.
Tenzin chose to pursue physiotherapy because the profession combines medicine, physics and engineering especially bio- mechanics. When asked about the small number of Tibetans entering the physiotherapy profession, Tenzin opined that degrees were offered mostly by private colleges and high fees coupled with limited practical opportunities served as a huge barrier. Tenzin was able to complete his education thanks to financial support from his sister who lives overseas. Tenzin’s future plans include undertaking more research, performing clinical practices, and possibly working as a physiotherapist at a major fitness center.
Tenzin is volunteering as a physiotherapist at the Department of Health’s Tso-Jhe hospital in Byllakuppe Settlement. His responsibilities include: learning about patient disabilities and assisting with developing therapy programs, interacting with a range of patients in a variety of physical conditions, and developing good relations with Indian physiotherapists in the locality.
Dhang-shab-pa Tenzin was born in India and attended Kodaikanal International School in Tamil Nadu, before immigrating with his family to Boston, MA. Tenzin’s mother moved to Boston, MA in 1992 as part of the “Immigration Act of 1990” and his dad was a teacher at Central Schools for over 15 years; currently working at Broad Institute of MIT/Harvard.
Tenzin is the middle child in a family of three siblings. His older brother is a Systems Engineer, while his sister is finishing her Bachelor’s degree. Over the years Tenzin has encompassed a variety of skills. He attained a BSEE (Computer & Electrical Engineering) with high honors, MSEE (Electrical Engineering) with a concentration in semiconductor devices & circuits, MSEM (Engineering Management) with Technological Entrepreneurship and MSME (Mechanical Engineering) with a concentration in Mechanics.
Tenzin currently works as an Engineer in Cambridge, MA. He is also a member of the Tibetan Association of Boston, helping the association seek out a cultural center. During his off-time Tenzin enjoys golf, basketball, flying and has a passion for electronics. He is currently pursuing his private pilot license.
Under a virtual position created by Tibetan Computer Resource Center (TCRC), Tenzin will help identify the needs and challenges of current Central Tibetan Administration IT infrastructure. He is working closely with TCRC administrators on internet security, technology capacity building, development of new tech products and services, helping define and draft policies, and working on grant projects.
Although Tenzin works full-time and has other commitments, he encourages other Tibetan university students and professionals like him to join Tibet Corps even if through a virtual position. “We have a chance to contribute our skills and knowledge for a right cause,” says Tenzin.
Dhang-shab-pa Caroline’s father, Ngawang Lobsang Gawa, left Amdo with his family in 1959, and was one of the first children to attend the Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV), Dharamsala. He was then part of the first group of Tibetan students to be sent to the Pestalozze International Village in England.
Due to her father’s international career, Caroline attended schools in Switzerland, Belgium and United States but has lived in the United Kingdom since she was thirteen years old. After majoring with a biology degree from Bristol University, Caroline went on to study a law conversion course and has one more year of law studies to complete before starting her career at a law firm in London specializing in medical and family law.
In 2005, Caroline spent four months volunteering as a teacher at TCV. She has also volunteered at the Office of Tibet in London.
Caroline with her excellent writing skills is serving within the Kashag Secretariat as a development and communications associate. Her responsibilities include writing project briefs and preparing presentation materials on core CTA projects, coordinating a special mailing in early August, drafting a proposal for a major project for the Department of Information and International Relations, and assisting with specific communication follow-ups.
Dhang-shab-pa Sherab was born and raised in Orissa Tibetan Refugee Settlement (camp#3). She attended CST Chandragiri upto tenth grade and completed her high school from CST Mussoorie. Her amala worked as a cashier at the local Tibetan Handicraft store and pala ran the popular Sonam Paan Shop and also plied the sweater trade in the winter. Sherab emigrated to United States in 1997 and currently lives in Minneapolis. She attended the Minnesota School of Business and received a Bachelors in accounting and is currently pursuing a Masters in Accounting from the Keller Graduate School of Management.
Sherab served as a Revenue Tax Specialist with the Minnesota State Department of Revenue and has also worked as an Internal Revenue Agent auditing small businesses for the Internal Revenue Service, an agency of the United States government. She is the current treasurer of the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota. She wants to sit for the CPA exam and become a Certified Public Accountant.
Sherab is the first Tibet Corps dhang-shab-pa. She enrolled into Tibet Corps in April 2012 signing a three-month service contract. She is currently serving in CTA’s Office of Auditor General (OAG) as a tax and accounting specialist. Her work has involved auditing the financial records of the Office of Tibet, New York; training OAG staff on U.S. federal and New York state tax policies and laws around charitable giving in the United States; and helping edit and update OAG’s auditing manual.
When asked what motivated her to serve through Tibet Corps, Sherab replied, “I have an awful lot to thank the community and CTA – the support my family received at the settlement, my education, the fact that I was able to emigrate to the United States, etc. I’m now able and want to, in some small way, give back to my community and people.”
